::The GOOD: The location of Shadow Art Performance Hotel is excellent. It is 10 mins walk to Houhai Lake area which has an abundance of retail shops along the hutongs (alleys) and restaurants and bars along the eastern corner of the lake. There are also plenty of restaurants to try along Dingfu Street (or one of the parallel alleys). The closest metro stations are Ping'anli or Beihai North and can get to the big attractions like Summer Palace and Tiananmen/Forbidden City easy enough with 1 or 2 changes. There is also the local site of Prince Gong's mansion not far from the Hotel (10 mins walk) which is worth visiting as it is LESS touristy and smaller scale compared to the forbidden city. On certain evenings, there are shadow art performances (see photos) and shadow art lessons. There are also happy hours drinks and food specials! Breakfast includes hot and cold selections, with cakes and pastries, juices, coffee, tea. The staff were ever friendly all hours of the day. For improvement: The room overall was comfortable but certain areas needed work. There were unfinished electrical works and loose tiling. Also, the room needed more hooks or rails for hang towels. See photos. The breakfast is good, but towards the end (last 30 mins or so), once plates are empty, they do not bring out any extras, so best to head to breakfast earlier rather than later.

::A very nice, modern boutique hotel. However, because of the location and nature of hu tongs, taxis do not like coming into the area. The family suite was small for 3 people. Breakfast was a nice balance of Western and Chinese cuisine. Ping An'Li subway station is a 10 minute walk south and there's plenty of bike rentals around. The front desk also speaks English and can arrange Great Wall tours.

::We just stopped by while perusing some local bars and it was totally worth it. The traditional theme added a nice relaxing touch to the usually bustling area. Will definitely have to stay there my next time in Beijing.

::Incredible hotel! At first you may be a little scared when you see the area because some of our standards may be a little high, but they explain it all in their hotel information book. It's in one of the last remaining old cities. The area is perfectly safe and I've been walking around at night with absolutely no issues, China seems pretty safe anyways. Then you get to the hotel. The lobby is stunning! The building is around 100 years old, but was restored around 6 years ago for the hotel it is now. The rooms are a good size for china, they are clean and comfortable. The washroom is clean and the shower feels like heaven. The staff is very very nice and really friendly. They offer dumpling making courses (which we took and for the $10/person it is totally worth it because you also get a meal out of it :), they also have other workshops, Chinese puppet shows, and the tours they offer are top knotch. It is also only a 10 minute walk to the subway, which is my preferred transportation in Beijing. This will be my go to place when I come back to Beijing.
