If you are into the arts and have a day to spare when you visit Beijing, this is a place worth visiting as it showcases a large range of art works from China and around the world.

Its permanent collection includes both ancient and contemporary Chinese artworks as well as notable Western artworks. Although the museum contains collection of imperial Chinese art, its main mission is to serve as a national level art museum dedicated to displaying, collecting and researching the modern and contemporary artistic works of China. It has a main building of four stories, the first three being display areas. There are 21 exhibition halls at the museum. Its collections are divided into specific categories of: traditional Chinese painting, oil painting, print, sculpture,Chinese New Year picture, traditional picture story, caricature, watercolor painting, lacquer, porcelain, andcostumes

The entrance is for free, passport is needed, but no one warned us there was a reconstruction going on and most of the floors were closed to public. In the remaining floors majority of art is Chinese calligraphy only without any English description or materials. Since we spent a lot of time getting there, it was a great disappointment and a waste of time. Definitely would not recommend to someone who has limited amount of time for Beijing, there is much more to see than this.

An amazing art museum! It's free, all you need to bring is your passport to get a ticket. They host a wide array of different exhibits, usually highlighting Chinese artists, but you can also expect to see foreign art there, too. Be sure to check the website before you go, so you can make sure they're not in the middle of changing exhibits - at that time, there won't be much to see.
